My name is Adelita Hinojosa-Martin. I've lived in Brooklyn, NY, Flatbush/Ditmas Park neighborhood for many years. I lead an adult Social Dance Workout on Saturdays here in our neighborhood. I am a professional dancer and registered nurse. When the Covid Pandemic began February/March 2020, I was performing with a few different NYC dance project based companies, going on a mini tour around the Tri State area and had just accepted a newly added solo piece in the show "Carmen" which would be a shown over a dedicated weekend @ Lincoln Center here in NYC. While I have continued my training and feel stronger now compared to 2 years ago, my performing opportunities have been slim and nursing days long ( outpatient neurosurgery / oncology - thankfully I have a GREAT team). And here is where the seed idea for "Social Dance Workout" grew...deeply missing the opportunity to connect with community through movement, music and dance. This is an opportunity to connect with community, dance simple but fun movement, have a class lead a professional dancer/teacher, all while improving physical and mental health. Music ranges from Marc Anthony, Bruno Mars, Common, Janet Jackson, Missy Elliot, Orlando "Cacahito" Lopez, Celia Cruz, Anderson Park, Chaka Khan and more (song suggestions are welcomed). I can honestly say it brings joy and smiles to all.
About the Class
HOW TO SIGN UP:
- Go to RSVP tab for INDOOR class.
- Go to RSVP tab for OUTDOOR class.
The class focus varies slightly, pending the location of the class. I originally started the class outdoors behind PS 139. This continues as long as the temperature outside is at least 55F. The outdoor class is free and donations are welcomed. The class is approximately 50 min. I began an indoor class fall 2021. The class is held @ 773 Coney Island Ave 2nd floor (cross street Cortelyou Rd) @ Martin Striking Academy. The class is $10, covid card should be shown. City guidelines, CDC guidelines followed.
Either way - I'm excited to invite you into a space to enjoy a social dance class. You'll leave with a smile.
Outdoor class :
Location: Playground of P.S. 139 - back of school ( Argyle Rd, cross street is Cortelyou Rd)
Time: 10:30am - 11:20am
Cost: $5 suggested via cash or Venmo
We begin slow with gentle movement to "wake up" the body and spine. We focus on being present, breathing and moving in a way that keeps the body safe from injury. I'll give you feedback as needed. If you have a chronic injury, please let me know and I'll adjust the movement for safety. Cardio with dance movement. Different rhythms practiced - so fun! Light stretching and cool down. Parents are welcomed to bring their kids to play in the school yard or even to join our class (safety first, so speak to your kids about safety while playing. No childcare provided on my end, sorry!).
